Study team
Add the people who run this study, give each person one or more study seats, and use the table on this page for what those seats can do.
Who can open this: Principal investigator, Steering committee (full access)
Who this is for
Study team opens for the principal investigator and for Steering committee (full access). The principal investigator can change it. Everyone else who can open the page sees "Only a principal investigator can change the team." A Coordinator, Coder, Adjudicator, Biostatistics member, or Steering confirmer does not open this page.
A workspace role is not a study seat. Being an administrator of the workspace does not by itself put you on the study. Someone who is not in the workspace is added by an administrator under "Workspace settings, Members & roles".
The seats, in the order the add form lists them, are:
Table: the study seats and the line under each name. What each seat can do is the table on this page. Roles and access does not copy it.
| Seat | Line under the name |
|---|---|
| Principal investigator | Leads the study and the team |
| Steering committee (full access) | Approves and advises |
| Steering confirmer | Decides steering reviews and the structural gate, nothing else |
| Coder | Codes comments independently |
| Adjudicator | Settles coding disagreements |
| Biostatistics | Confirms what the rules decided |
| Coordinator | Runs recruitment and rounds |
A person can hold several of these at once. The table says "A person with several roles can do everything any of them can."
Steps
- Open Study team. The page says it is workspace members who run this study, and the role each has here. "Search the team" filters the list. On a saved study, "Changes are saved to this study." On a sample study, changes stay in the browser tab.
- Add someone who is already in the workspace. Under "Add a team member", choose "Person" ("Choose a workspace member") and "Role", then "Add to the team". On a saved study, "They are emailed that they were added." If everyone in the workspace is already on the team, the form says so.
- Change seats on the person's row. Tick the roles that apply. Removing someone asks "Remove [name] from the team?" and "Remove". They lose access at once. Everything they did stays on record. If you remove yourself, you lose access, and another principal investigator can add you back. If they held a coding seat, "Their coding seat becomes unassigned."
- Read "What each role can do". It is folded away until you open it. That table is the list of what each seat can do, and the page says the server checks the same table on every request. Do not keep a separate copy. Roles and access points at the same screen.
- Assign coding seats under "Coders and review roles". The fields are "Coder 1 (human)", "Coder 2 (human)", and "Settles disagreements". The card says coders work independently and never see each other's codes, and to assign both human coder slots before coding. Only the assigned adjudicator settles disagreements. A coder slot with history cannot be reassigned. See Coding and adjudication.
- Choose "Who confirms what the rules decided". The two choices are "The principal investigator or Biostatistics" ("Either may confirm each round's decision plan and decide panelists' suggestions.") and "Biostatistics only" ("Keeps the duties apart: the person who designed the study does not confirm what its rules decided. Once the study is launched this cannot be undone."). A study on the protocol rule set shows "This study uses the protocol rule set, which keeps these duties apart, so only Biostatistics confirms." The choice cannot be changed.
- Decide "Who else can open this study". "Let every workspace member read this study" is off by default. When it is on, anyone in the workspace can look but not change anything. Results and panelist identities keep their own rules.
- If the study has a "Steering group" card, that list is who is on the committee, from the expert directory. The card says it is separate from study roles and gives no access to the study. For a committee member to decide steering reviews and the structural gate in the app, add them to the study team as a Steering confirmer. They need a workspace account. See Steering decisions.
What the app will not do
- It will not let a study seat other than the principal investigator change the team. Steering committee (full access) can open the page and cannot change it.
- It will not treat a workspace administrator, member, or viewer as a study seat. Access to the study is the seats on this page, plus "Let every workspace member read this study" when that switch is on.
- It will not give the steering group, by itself, access to the study, its questionnaires, or its responses.
- It will not let you reassign a coder slot that already has coding history.
- It will not undo "Biostatistics only" after the study has launched, and it will not offer the wider choice on a protocol rule set.
